About the Team

Our Academic & Government team helps our communities accelerate knowledge for a better world by helping to establish, discover and advance knowledge. We do this by turning scientific discoveries into peer reviewed knowledge, hosting the world's richest corpus of knowledge, allowing users to unlock insights from content and by measuring the quality and impact of research - turning insights into outcomes.

About the Role

The Global Director Sales Compensation is responsible for the design, execution and continuous improvement of the sales compensation plan, quota setting and associated processes. The role impacts 500+ sales and customer success representatives across different regions and segments (Corporate and Academic and Government). All industry-standard commercial roles (SDR's, Sales Engineers, Account Managers etc) are present with specific compensation plans aligned with these roles.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure there is a compensation plan in place that incentivises growth and aligns with business objectives. Components of the compensation plan will require tailoring based on role, segment and/or other strategic goals.

  • Ensure there are systems and processes in place to effectively administer the compensation plan, including roll out and payouts, addressing ongoing queries from the Sales team, dealing with disputes etc.

  • Regularly assess the effectiveness of the sales compensation plan incentives by analysing plan results, such as quota attainment, payout distribution, pay to performance relationships etc. and determine whether alternative or additional incentives or plan structures are needed to drive behaviour in support of strategic objectives.

  • Be the trusted advisor on compensation-related topics and proactively advise on Plan enhancements to optimize pay to performance.

  • Ensure that exceptions to the standard comp plan are minimised and that processes are properly documented and approved.

  • Oversee the team that administers the compensation plan.  Ensure the team is equipped to deliver on its objectives and act as the ‘go to’ team for all compensation queries, dealing with these in a timely and sensible manner. You will support the optimization and standardization of the compensation plan processes and activities across the team and monitor service level agreements and quality standards.

  • Work closely with finance, HR, senior sales management, sales leadership and BTS (Elsevier IT) to achieve business goals. For example, you and your team will be responsible for the global roll up of compensation calculations and instruct local payroll to process payment of sales commissions.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience operating and managing people within sales compensation

  • Demonstrable experience of being able to develop and roll out compensation plans, including systems, tools and processes to support plan administration

  • Strong communication skills, in particular the ability to communicate clearly and simply with senior stakeholders

  • Strategic and operational capability
