The role is central to how legal and regulatory requirements are interpreted and applied in practice across a regulated, product-led consumer finance business.

This is not a purely operational role — it requires GC-level judgement, ownership and decision-making authority.

What's so exciting about this role?

This is a high-impact General Counsel role within a regulated, product-driven business. The successful candidate will act as the central decision-maker for legal and regulatory matters, operating within a lean and distributed model, and will play a key role in enabling business growth while managing risk effectively.

  • Lead legal oversight of retail finance / instalment lending products
  • Advise on:

  • Support development of new products and platform integrations
  • Data Protection (Strategic Oversight)
  • Provide strategic oversight of the data protection framework
  • Support internal DPO and Compliance
  • Advise on high-risk matters (e.g. breaches, cross-border transfers)
  • Corporate Governance (Oversight)
  • Retain oversight of governance framework and Board processes
  • Work with Legal Counsel and external CoSec providers on delivery
  • Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Act as a key integrator across:
    • Compliance
    • Product & Technology
    • Finance / Treasury
    • HR
    • Group functions
  • Ensure legal requirements are embedded effectively across the business

Who will thrive in this role?

You are customer obsessed and want to make a difference in their lives. You thrive in a fast-paced environment and are not afraid to challenge the status quo. You are a visionary leader who will roll up your sleeves to get things done.

We’re also looking for someone who brings:

  • Senior qualified lawyer (in NI (or E&W) and RoI) with significant post-qualification experience in any of these jurisdictions
  • Proven experience operating at General Counsel or equivalent senior level
  • Strong background in financial services regulation (consumer credit experience highly desirable)
  • Experience advising on product structuring and distribution models
  • Experience operating in lean or growth-stage environments

Critical Success Attributes (Essential)

Given the nature of the business and operating model, the successful candidate must demonstrate:

  • Strong Regulatory Judgement; an ability to make independent regulatory calls in ambiguous situations
  • Commercial Pragmatism; be able to enable business growth while managing risk appropriately
  • Comfort in a Lean, Distributed Model; able to operate effectively without large teams or infrastructure, comfortable working across a model where execution is distributed

  • Cross-Functional Integration; able to work seamlessly across Legal, Compliance, Product, HR, Finance and Group
  • Senior Presence with Hands-On Capability; confident operating at CEO and Board level
  • Ability to Operate in Ambiguity; comfortable in evolving structures and imperfect environments, able to provide clarity where frameworks are still developing.
