Develop and maintain React web applications for trade execution, portfolio management, and risk analysis. Build features with strong test coverage, collaborate across the technology stack, conduct code reviews, improve UI and UX, and contribute to architecture decisions. Work with real-time data, WebSockets, monorepo tooling, state management, monitoring, and AI-assisted development workflows. The role also involves REST and OpenAPI integration, automated testing, and performance improvements for data-intensive interfaces.

Validus is looking for a talented engineer to join our front-end development team. The front-end team is responsible for the design and development of our web applications implemented in React.

The front-end development team is part of the broader technology team working in collaboration with quants, back-end and platform engineers. Our teams work together to grow our technology platform, Horizon. Horizon comprises multiple applications for trade execution, portfolio management and risk analysis for alternative asset managers in various domains, such as private equity, private debt and real estate.

We work with AI tooling as a normal part of how we build, and we are looking for someone who has a keen interest on how to incorporate new tools and ways of working into our development workflow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver new features to a high standard with meaningful test coverage for Validus applications including the order management system and the risk management system.
  • Work collaboratively with other teams on features spanning multiple parts of the stack.
  • Give useful, thorough code reviews and pair with others across the team.
  • Look to improve UI and UX across our product range to improve ease-of-use, and uphold consistency in our design principles.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, such as daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, estimation, and retrospectives.
  • Bring ideas on the current technology stack and be part of the conversations about changing it, such as state management or how we manage our API calls.
  • Help lay the technical foundations of real-time communication between back-end and front-end using WebSockets.
  • Build on, and improve our implementation of Nx as a Front-end monorepo, built with Vite.
  • Utilise Zustand and React Query (TanStack) for state and data management, and React Router for routing.
  • Work on real-time data components, such as market data in graphs using HighCharts, to keep users up to-date.
  • Use HandsOnTable to display large amounts of data, whilst improving performance to give the user an “excel” like feel within the browser.
  • Use front-end monitoring and session replay to understand how features behave for real users, and to get to the bottom of reported issues.

Working with AI

  • Use AI tooling as part of your normal working day, and take full ownership of everything it produces. Review it properly, understand it, and be able to defend it in a code review.
  • Think in terms of workflows rather than single prompts. That means investing in the context these tools work from, whether that is repository level instructions, reusable skills or a shared knowledge base, so the output stays consistent and other people can rely on it. For example, utilising and contributing to our DevOps and testing skills to ensure features work end-to-end.
  • Bring ideas on where AI makes front-end work more scalable. Turning designs into components, keeping interfaces consistent across a large monorepo and taking the repetition out of building screens are all areas we are actively interested in.
  • Get involved in connecting tools together, for example bringing design tools such as Figma into the development flow, or wiring our own systems up over MCP so an agent can do something useful end to end.

Requirements
  • Strong TypeScript knowledge.
  • Strong React knowledge.
  • Experience with state management libraries, such as Zustand.
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable and testable code.
  • Experience with writing automated tests and testing frameworks like Vitest and Playwright.
  • Experience consuming and helping shape REST API contracts, including working with an OpenAPI specification.
  • Ability to implement beautiful styles using CSS.
  • Real experience of AI-assisted development, and a clear view on where it helps and where it gets in the way. Some exposure to, or clear interest in, agentic workflows and tool use over MCP.
  • Curiosity about financial markets and an appetite to learn the domain.
  • Ability to take ownership of work independently.
  • Good communication skills working in a cross-discipline environment.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Experience with financial risk management software or platforms.
