Company mission

In the future, almost everything we consume will simply materialise on our doorsteps – what we call “e-commerce” today will simply be “commerce” tomorrow. But if we continue on today’s trajectory, the growth of e-commerce risks damaging the environment, alienating our communities, and straining the bottom-line for small businesses.

Relay is an e-commerce-native logistics network. We are built from the ground up for environmental, social, and economic sustainability. By building from the ground up we are able to entirely rethink both the middle and last mile enabling us to reduce the number of miles driven to deliver each parcel, lower carbon emissions, and lower costs, all while channelling funds to community members.

At the same time, we’re fixing the last broken aspect of e-commerce for consumers: delivery. As shoppers, we should have complete control over when and how we receive our purchases, and we should be able to return unwanted items as easily as we ordered them. That’s why whenever you buy from a merchant powered by Relay, you’ll be able to reschedule your delivery at any time. And if you don’t like what you ordered, at the tap of a button we’ll send someone to pick it up.

To orchestrate this complex ballet, Relay relies on a wide range of technologies, from advanced routing and planning to sophisticated user experiences that guide our team members on the ground.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Financial Controller to establish and lead our core finance operations. You will play a critical role in overseeing all financial activities, with a strong emphasis on treasury management, working capital optimisation, and finance systems implementation to support scalable growth.

This is a unique opportunity to join a high-growth business at a pivotal moment, with real ownership over building robust financial foundations. This is a high impact role with direct exposure to the leadership team.

As the Financial Controller at Relay, you can expect to have the following responsibilities

  • Treasury Management:

    • Manage day-to-day cash flow, banking relationships, and liquidity planning.

    • Develop short- and long-term cash forecasts and financing strategies to support company growth.

  • Working Capital Optimisation:

    • Lead initiatives to improve receivables, payables, and inventory cycles.

    • Design and implement working capital KPIs and reporting frameworks.

  • Systems Implementation:

    • Select, implement, and optimise financial systems (ERP, TMS, billing, etc.).

    • Build scalable processes for accounting, reporting, and operational finance.

  • Financial Operations:

    • Own monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes.

    • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

    • Manage external relationships with key financial institutions

  • Strategic Finance Support:

    • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and strategic decision-making.

    • Provide real-time financial insights to drive operational and commercial outcomes.

  • Team Development:

    • Build and mentor a small, high-performing finance team as we scale.

We are looking for candidates who have

  • 6+ years' experience in finance and accounting, ideally with a mix of startup and established company backgrounds.

  • Experience in a Series A–C high-growth environment, preferably logistics, supply chain, or tech sectors.

  • Deep expertise in treasury, cash flow forecasting, and working capital management.

  • Track record of implementing and scaling financial systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, QuickBooks, Xero).

  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent preferred but not required).

  • Hands-on, proactive, and solutions-driven approach - comfortable operating with ambiguity and building from scratch.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

The qualifications and experiences above act as a loose guide to what we’re looking for. We’d still love to hear from you if you have more or less experience, so long as the core skills can be demonstrated.

Relay is offering

  • Competitive salary and equity package

  • High 25 days annual leave per year (plus bank holidays).

  • Contributory pension scheme.

  • Hybrid working

  • Free membership of the gym in our co-working space in London.

  • Cycle-to-work scheme

  • Dynamic, entrepreneurial culture with room to grow

  • Plenty of team socials and events - from pottery painting to life-size Monopoly and escape rooms
