About The Job

Reporting to the Head of Finance Operations Transformation and Controls Governance, this role will be responsible for building a small team that become the experts in understanding the systems and data that are critical to Finance and Actuarial (F&A), and will ultimately be a critical support for the finance business system and data owners. In the short to medium term you will lead the transformation of the Ledger close process to target a maximum 21 day close for IFRS17 reporting and apply improvements to both UK GAAP and IFRS17 redesign. Your team will work closely with the BAU change team as well as change programmes that are in place to deliver effective finance change to the broader F&A teams. You will be a key consultation on all changes that are required to F&A systems ensuring that these are correctly designed from a business architecture perspective. You will work directly with our ABS Finance team, and in particular with our ABS systems architects and support teams. All technical changes to F&A owned systems will require your oversight from a business architecture perspective.

This role will also have oversight of the data governance requirements for F&A. The team will support the roll out of data governance across F&A working closely with the AUL Data team to ensure compliance with the overall organisation’s data governance framework. The team will need to work across the end to end data flows of the organisation, helping the F&A data owners to identify critical data downstream and ensuring data quality measurement is in place, that is relevant to the consumption of the critical data within the F&A processes. This team will also ensure full oversight of the data and system issues that arise, impacting the F&A processes and will drive remediation of system and data issues with other functional areas across the front to back data flows.

What You’ll Spend Your Time Doing

Short – medium term goal – Transform the Ledger Close Process

  • Redesign and drive the implementation of a combined UK GAAP and IFRS17 ledger close process to achieve a maximum 21 day close working with the AUL Syndicate Financial Controller.
  • Work to build full governance over month end close including key inputs from Operations, Underwriting and Claims plus other key areas of the business impacting the Financial outcomes.

Lead the business architecture across Finance and Actuarial (F&A) owned systems:

  • Work side by side with the identified F&A business system owners to support effective tech changes to our systems
  • Consult as the key Finance Business Architect with other functional areas to ensure downstream system changes are successfully integrated into F&A systems working with BAU change and other finance and business change programmes.
  • Develop and lead, with input from F&A teams as well as the Finance change teams, the definition of the IT change roadmap for F&A. Maintain and keep the roadmap up to date as the roadmap owner.
  • Drive the use of tools such as Alteryx within the F&A community, to ensure strategic application that aligns with F&A IT Roadmap.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, finance, HR, and external vendors, to ensure seamless integration of new processes and technologies within the F&A systems stack.

Lead data governance across F&A:

  • Work with the AUL Data team to ensure F&A meet requirements of the organisations’ data governance framework.
  • Oversee the rollout of data governance across F&A
  • Provide specific support to the F&A data owners to ensure their obligations are met from tracing data lineage, ensuring appropriate risk and control assessment is done for data risk, DQ measurement is in place for finance owned critical data and drive appropriate downstream DQ measurement and tracking for downstream critical data impacting F&A processes.
  • Provide central co-ordination of all data (and system) issues arising across F&A, with the central data governance forum, and drive remediation of data issues within F&A as well as with other functional areas across the front to back data flows.

Stakeholder Management:

Engage with key stakeholders (CFO, senior management) to ensure alignment of with the broader finance transformation initiatives and business objectives. Responsible for effective engagement of F&A system and data owners, as well as ensuring the requirements of F&A systems and data owners are sponsored as part of broader AUL- wide business change.

People Management:

You will be responsible for a team of 3-4 FTE depending on volume of activity. From time to time you may need to add additional contingent resources depending on the level of change activity.  

Change Management:

Follow effective change management strategies to support the successful adoption of new finance processes and systems.

Train and guide finance teams in adapting to new tools, technologies, and ways of working.

Risk Management & Compliance:

Ensure that systems and data initiatives comply with relevant regulatory requirements, internal policies, and risk management practices.

Financial Data & Reporting Improvements:

Collaborate with finance teams to improve data quality, financial reporting, and analysis through enhanced systems and tools.

Ensure that all systems and data functional deigns are fully documented, and continuously maintained with easily accessible documentation.

Technology Implementation:

Support where necessary, the BAU change team or change programmes with the testing and validation of system changes, ensuring they meet the needs of the business and finance teams.

Budget Management:

If appropriate, oversee any budget for system changes ensuring efficient allocation of resources and meeting financial targets.

What You'll Need:

Education and Experience:

  • Qualified accountant or actuarial qualification, with experience working in Finance project delivery  
  • Past experience working as a business analyst within financial services preferably insurance but not necessary, ideally across finance, actuarial, system and data or regulatory driven programmes;
  • Experience managing a technical and system changes with experience of defining system and data requirements
  • Understanding of working in change delivery, milestone and deliverables based programmes  
  • Experience in data governance and / or Finance and Actuarial systems design is desirable but not required. (business design not necessarily technical architecture)
  • 10+ yrs post qualifying
