At SumUp, we’re on a mission to bring merchants and consumers closer together and help local communities thrive. We’re creating a rewarding loyalty experience that connects people to the small businesses they love, while enabling seamless, free transactions for our merchants.

SumUp Local puts loyalty and merchant discovery front and center on every checkout screen, helping businesses grow their customer base while expanding our consumer network.

This role offers a high-impact opportunity to work at a fast pace on a wide range of challenges with a global reach. It’s a chance to bring strategic thinking, creativity, and bold ideas to the Consumer Tribe, driving innovation across SumUp Local and shaping how consumers and merchants connect. Collaboration across the organization will be key, giving exposure to multiple teams and a chance to influence the product at every level.

If building consumer-facing products, designing loyalty platforms, and helping small businesses thrive excites you, this is the role to make a real difference.

What you’ll do:

  • Partner with Product and Design to define short- and long-term goals, translate customer needs into actionable plans, participate in technical design and architecture discussions, and ensure features are delivered on time with high quality. Your work will directly impact the daily experiences of our local users.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide structured feedback to help team members develop their skills and grow in their careers. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing culture where innovation and problem-solving thrive.
  • Work closely with engineering, product, marketing, and business teams to align priorities, identify trade-offs, and drive decisions that balance customer impact with technical feasibility. You’ll be a bridge between customer needs and technical solutions.
  • Ensure our backend systems are reliable, scalable, and secure while continuously improving development processes. Help the team balance speed and quality to deliver features safely to our customers.
  • While leading the team, remain involved in solving complex technical challenges, reviewing designs and code, and providing guidance to ensure best practices are followed.
  • Advocate for the needs of local users and help shape product decisions that improve usability, accessibility, and overall customer satisfaction in your market.

You’ll be great for this role if you have:

  • Deep backend engineering experience with hands-on work on distributed systems, APIs, and databases. Experience with Go, Kotlin, Python, or Swift and cloud-native environments (preferably AWS, Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus.
  • Experience managing engineering teams in complex environments involving multiple technologies, priorities, and cross-functional collaboration, with at least 2+ years as an Engineering Manager.
  • Product-oriented engineering leadership, comfortable working with a startup/scale up mindset and making pragmatic trade-offs to drive impact.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, able to simplify technical topics and build alignment and trust across diverse stakeholders.
  • Empathetic leadership, providing constructive feedback, developing team members, and guiding teams through scale or change.
  • Self-driven, flexible, and adaptable, capable of shifting context and priorities with ease.
  • Strong team focus, prioritizing collective success over individual silos, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared ownership.

Why you should join SumUp:

  • Opportunity to work with a truly global, multicultural team from our central Covent Garden location, wrapped in historic charm and modern flair. This involves an office-first setup
  • Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: be part of a workplace that values and promotes diversity, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone's perspectives are respected and embraced
