Meet the team behind this journeyYou will lead the Olympus Platform team, the engine room responsible for the internal developer platform that powers DeepL. Your team builds and runs the foundational compute and storage layers—specifically Kubernetes and Ceph clusters—that support products used by over 100 million people worldwide.
We operate at the bleeding edge of scale, managing over 10,000 pods across 1,000+ nodes in a hybrid environment. You will work closely with our Data Center Operations team (who manage our in-house hardware) and drive our strategic expansion into AWS. You will also collaborate with our sister team managing software services (Redis, Kafka, Postgres), sharing on-call responsibilities to ensure total platform reliability
Your responsibilities
The core purpose of this role is to develop your engineering team into an autonomous, high-performing stage and take responsibility for ensuring high-quality service delivery.
You will inspire, develop, recruit, and motivate a platform engineering team, conducting regular 1:1s to set individual development plans and fostering a healthy, non-retaliatory feedback culture.
A critical part of your role will be supporting the team as they take on responsibility for AWS and pushing our hybrid cloud strategy, specifically helping them upskill in cloud technologies where knowledge is currently limited.
You are expected to identify priorities and "clean house" by reducing unstructured work and bringing more structure to projects, which brings assurance and stability to the team.
You will collaborate with key stakeholders to represent the platform's capabilities and ensure the timely delivery of new services while maintaining existing ones.
The role involves remaining approximately 30% hands-on, where you will actively contribute to tech reviews, system design discussions, and code reviews to support team members.
You will support the team by participating in a humane on-call offering and enabling them to effectively balance competing priorities between planned roadmap work and unplanned tasks.
As a collaborative partner with Infrastructure Operations leadership, you will oversee the team’s strategy, quarterly goals, and technical roadmap.
Skills & Qualities we look for
We are looking for a candidate with a track record of successfully leading and scaling a Platform, DevOps, or SRE team.
You must possess a high degree of hands-on technical experience in platform development and architecture, having spent several years working as a senior engineer.
Expertise with Kubernetes is preferred, covering both cloud-managed and on-premise environments, and ideally, you also have experience with Ceph storage systems.
We look for experience with several specific technologies in our stack, including AWS, on-prem infrastructure, Terraform, ACK, ArgoCD, and Harbor.
You should be a pragmatic problem solver who enjoys navigating both the technical and non-technical challenges associated with engineering management.
You must have the ability to identify tactical and strategic priorities to help navigate the team through a long request list to achieve long-term objectives.
Don’t be put off if you meet most but not all of these areas - we’d still love to hear from you.
We are an equal opportunity employerYou are welcome at DeepL for who you are—we appreciate authenticity here. Our product is for everyone, and so is our workplace. The more voices we have represented and amplified in our business, the more we will all succeed, contribute, and think forward! So bring us your personal experience, your perspectives, and your background. It’s in our diversity that we will find the power to break down language barriers in the world.
