About the role:
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Grafana Drilldown team. Our managers take an active role in creating a productive environment for our engineers; be it through removing blockers and impediments, facilitating cross-team collaboration and understanding, or by aiding the team in helping themselves by constantly improving and refining their working practices. You’ll be responsible for managing a team of distributed engineers working across a variety of systems and helping them to perform at their best.
About the team:
In Grafana Drilldown, our mission is to design and maintain intuitive, opinionated, queryless user experiences that empower users to quickly answer telemetry questions through simple point-and-click interactions. We currently support queryless exploration across Mimir/Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope.
Requirements:
- Empathy and transparency. The core focus of the role is people. You'll coach, mentor, and support engineers in their growth. Champion a healthy team culture with psychological safety, autonomy, and accountability.
- Drive project delivery. You'll help the team define goals, set milestones, communicate timelines, and navigate dependencies. You may need to take on project management responsibilities to ensure smooth and predictable delivery.
- Technical background. While you won’t be hands-on coding, your strong engineering background enables you to engage in meaningful technical discussions, ask the right questions, and support sound decision-making.
- Support autonomy. Our engineers take pride in owning both the technical and product aspects of their work. You are comfortable working with engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their decision making, be it technical or product focussed.
- Build product intuition. You’ll collaborate closely with some excellent Product Managers and Product Designers. We’re building a product for engineers, by engineers. So, you should feel comfortable developing a strong product sense and use our products in anger to develop empathy for the user.
- Stay informed. While you’re great with people and adept at managing relationships, you still keep up-to-date with the latest technical trends and shifts in order to maintain and enhance your understanding of the challenges your teams face.
- Understand our stack. While deep expertise in our exact tools isn’t required, familiarity with frontend frameworks (especially TypeScript/React), backend development in Go, and tools like GitHub, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope will help you ramp up quickly and speak your team’s language.
Your day-to-day will include:
- Regular 1:1s to ensure your direct reports are motivated, happy, and engaged.
- We coach, mentor, and advise. Upwards, sideways, and every-which-ways.
- Progress over Perfection. We provide continuous feedback to engineers to ensure that they can add value, while trying to maintain a high standard.
- Contributing to and reviewing design documents for upcoming features.
- Ensuring features are well-defined and ready for development.
- Advising your reports on how to break down features into tasks.
- Collaborating with our Engineering Leaders to help define and influence product strategy, roadmaps and technical designs.
- Maintaining headcount by working with our People Ops team to attract and hire talent.
In the United Kindgom, the Base compensation range for this role is GBP 100,930 - GBP 121,116. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonus (if applicable) and other benefits listed here.
