Engineering Manager (FinCrime Core)

London Office - Hybrid: 4 days in the office, 1 day working from home

About the Role

You'll lead the FinCrime Core team, responsible for Ebury's AML (Anti-Money Laundering) platform. This is a critical, regulated domain where your work directly impacts:

  • Sanctions Screening: Real-time screening of customers and transactions against global watchlists
  • Transaction Monitoring: Detection of suspicious payment patterns
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring Ebury meets FCA, EU AML directives, and global regulatory requirements

The platform processes millions of screening requests and payment events, requiring high reliability, low latency, and strong audit trails.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Own the AML Screening and Transaction Monitoring domain, setting the 0–6 month technical roadmap
  • Drive architecture decisions for event-driven systems (Kafka, SNS/SQS)
  • Ensure integrations with third-party providers are reliable and performant
  • Champion observability with comprehensive logging, metrics, and alerting for a regulated environment
  • Balance "keep the lights on" work with modernisation initiatives
  • Unblock the team through code reviews, architecture guidance, or hands-on contribution when needed
  • Provide technical leadership and step in for Senior Engineers when required
  • Ensure all systems have appropriate support, SLAs, on-call rotas, and documentation

Delivery Management

  • Responsible for team delivery, sprint planning, and project health
  • Assess the criticality of unplanned work, minimising context-switching and unnecessary pressure
  • Balance team capacity with roadmap demands
  • Instil urgency to find the right balance between velocity and quality
  • Ensure all incidents are owned and resolved

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Act as the primary liaison between engineering and product, partnering with your counterpart to ensure full alignment
  • Communicate progress clearly and escalate issues effectively

People Management

  • Lead a team of engineers at varying levels, creating stability and psychological safety
  • Manage performance and well-being, initiating corrective actions when needed
  • Provide coaching, performance reviews, and career development
  • Foster a culture of ownership, feedback, and continuous improvement
  • Hire, grow, and retain high-performing engineers

Process and Performance

  • Ensure company processes are executed effectively and on time
  • Accountable for team KPIs: velocity, quality, on-time delivery, morale, and staffing
  • May manage a limited budget for tools or specific project costs

Qualifications

Required

  • Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or similar leadership role
  • Deep understanding of software development methodologies and best practices
  • Recent hands-on experience (within the last 5 years) as a Tech Lead or Senior+ Engineer
  • Experience with agile development processes
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Passion for technology and innovation

Nice to Have

  • Experience in regulated industries (FinTech, banking, payments)
  • Understanding of AML/KYC processes and compliance requirements
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and Kafka
  • Familiarity with third-party screening or monitoring providers
  • Experience managing on-call rotations for critical systems

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Opportunity to work on challenging and rewarding projects
  • Collaborative and supportive work environment
  • Be part of a dynamic and growing company
