Who we’re looking for

We are looking for an experienced and capable Engineering Lead to help our teams deliver high-quality software—reliably, securely, and at pace, that makes a tangible impact on our business.

You must be proficient and up-to-date in your field, have a good idea of how to design software for future supportability and scalability, and be able to command the respect of your engineering peers immediately.

You’ll be a hands-on, pragmatic engineer who brings strong judgement, calm leadership, and a continuous-improvement mindset. This role supports a busy operational domain: priorities can shift, deadlines can be tight, and there will be periods of sustained delivery pressure. We’re therefore looking for someone who can stay positive and constructive under pressure, help others navigate ambiguity, and make sensible trade-offs without compromising quality, control, or safety.

You’ll put collaboration at the heart of your approach to software development, inviting input widely and making sure all voices are heard.

You’ll work across Public Markets Operations Technology, supporting multiple teams and workstreams. You’ll guide design and implementation, raise engineering standards, and coach engineers (including third-party partners). You’ll also collaborate with Enterprise Engineering and other Engineering Leads to shape shared practices, patterns, and reusable components across Schroders.

What you’ll do
You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the development of applications using appropriate technologies for the problem space
  • Owning and influencing software delivery across design, development, testing, release and implementation
  • Partnering with business stakeholders and analysts to translate outcomes, features and user stories into working, supportable software
  • Working with Delivery Leads to prioritise backlogs, manage dependencies, and ensure technical debt is visible and actively addressed
  • Collaborating with UX and product/design colleagues to deliver intuitive, efficient user experiences
  • Explaining technical options and decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including risks, trade-offs and rationale
  • Working with engineers across teams to identify and resolve cross-stream dependencies and reduce delivery friction
  • Writing and maintaining infrastructure as code to support CI/CD and consistent environments
  • Setting the tone for engineering quality: code reviews, secure engineering, testing discipline, maintainability and operational readiness
  • Mentoring engineers and supporting capability growth, including constructive feedback and coaching for third-party engineering partners
  • Contributing to agile ceremonies (refinement, planning, demos, retrospectives) with a focus on outcomes and learning
  • Contributing to the Enterprise Engineering community through shared standards, patterns, reference architectures and knowledge sharing
  • Supporting the maintenance, support and ongoing evolution of a complex platform, with a focus on operational stability and measurable business value
  • Actively managing the application estate; “end-of-life” software, upgrade and vulnerabilities
