A new opportunity exists for a one-year fixed term contract for maternity cover for a qualified and experienced Employment Lawyer to join our Legal Team based in London.

What you’ll do

You will be the sole EMEA Employment Counsel, advising the business on the full range of employment law matters across EMEA.

As part of a global Legal, Compliance & Risk team, you will report into the Associate General Counsel based in Southfields, Detroit, who has responsibility for Litigation and Employment matters globally.

This is a great opportunity to face technical challenges in an interesting position, developing your knowledge and commercial acumen and supporting your growth as a well-rounded legal counsel. You’ll be supported by the Associate General Counsel, business leaders, mentors, coaches, and colleagues to ensure you are learning and developing.

You will be providing a wide range of employment law advice and assistance across the EMEA business. You will support our People team, as well as the leadership team, including the EMEA Chief Operations Officer, Partnership Matters Office, and the EMEA country and regional leaders.

You will be comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment with significant exposure to senior stakeholders. The role includes:

  • Providing general employment law advice on the full range of issues faced by an international business, including but not limited to contractual arrangements, employment rights, HR policies, restrictive covenants, employment litigation, contingent labour matters (including contractor/worker status), recruitment, LLP membership, redundancies and exits
  • Advising on senior executive recruitment and exits, including advising on strategy, instructing and managing external counsel, and negotiating and drafting contracts
  • Advising on employee relations issues including internal investigations, disciplinary and grievance processes and performance management
  • Instructing, supervising and analysing the advice provided by external counsel in the EMEA jurisdictions
  • Supporting the People team in developing strategies and policies to ensure and maintain compliance with employment related regulation and manage risk across the EMEA business
  • Supporting the business with transactions and advising on TUPE (and equivalent) legislation throughout Europe
  • Drafting documents including employment contracts, settlement agreements, restrictive covenants, bonus plans, and People policies
  • Supporting colleagues in Legal, Compliance and Risk with issues relating to employment law and contingent workers.

What you’ll need

  • Ability to give well-reasoned legal advice, including when under time pressure or in fast-moving or ambiguous circumstances
  • Independent and autonomous working, but able to identify issues and understand when to escalate or involve other team members
  • Self-motivation and the willingness to proactively maintain your awareness of key changes to employment law impacting the UK and wider EMEA region
  • Organisational and prioritisation skills, including the ability to responding to business issues in a timely manner
  • Combining sound legal advice with business acumen and judgment to provide workable, pragmatic solutions
  • Developing strong working relationships with senior stakeholders, peers and colleagues from across the business and being a true team player
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • At least 8 years’ post-qualification experience* as a UK-based employment lawyer, of which at least 1 year was spent in-house
  • Knowledge and experience of other legal systems in EMEA (including, ideally, at least one of the jurisdictions in which AlixPartners does business)
  • Willingness to learn about any jurisdictions in which you do not already have knowledge or experience
  • Excellent English spoken and written communication skills and drafting skills (German, French and/ or Italian language skills would be a bonus but not essential)
