The opportunity:

It’s an exciting time to join Markel as our business grows, and we have a great new role for an Employment Law Solicitor / Barrister to join our team based in Croydon. Markel includes our Markel Law LLP business, who provide legal and human resources consultancy services as well as our professional legal advice line service. The role is based in our specialist Employment Advice Line Team who manage calls and emails for our clients. Our team work one day per week in our Croydon office (Wednesdays) with 4 days working from home. Shifts are: 9am-5.30pm, 8am-4.30pm and 10am-6.30pm.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Delivery of high-quality legal advice on a variety of employment related matters through both telephone and email communication

  • Reviewing and assisting with the drafting of documentation as required

  • Working in accordance with agreed service levels

  • Management of own workload ensuring that a high standard in relation to both productivity and efficiency is maintained

  • Maintaining a sound working knowledge of all aspects of employment law and best practice

  • Liaising with and supporting fellow colleagues in a team-like manner as the operational needs of the business dictate

  • Ensuring relevant shifts are covered, including day and out of hours rotas as applicable

  • Maintaining and producing paper based and electronic records where required

  • Liaising with Markel Law’s Litigation Unit and Manchester office as appropriate

Our must haves:

  • Employment law knowledge and experience

  • Experience of communicating effectively in a professional environment with a range of people

  • Good IT skills across Microsoft, Word, Outlook

  • The ability to provide accurate and concise advice in writing

  • Excellent written skills and attention to detail/accuracy

  • Have excellent customer care skills, and an ability to empathise with callers where necessary

  • Be commercially aware at all times and to offer both practical as well as legal solutions

  • Have an analytical and problem–solving approach to advice

  • Be flexible and adaptable both within the commercial unit and assisting the various employment teams as the needs of the business dictate

  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment and uphold company standards

  • Have good document drafting skills and an eye for detail

  • Have the ability to gain and retain the client confidence

  • Have sound working knowledge of all appropriate electronic research facilities

  • Have the ability to produce written guidance to the client of a high standard that is clear, practical, and legally accurate
