Job Description:

Are you interested in learning how we apply economics to regulate the UK's communications sectors?

As the UK’s communications regulator, we’re at the forefront of innovation, working on projects that shape the future of how we stay connected. From phones and broadband to TV, radio, and even the postal service, we’re responsible for keeping the UK connected. But that’s just the beginning. We’re also tackling one of the biggest challenges of our time – making the online world a safer and more trusted place.

You’ll be part of one of the UK’s largest and most dynamic teams of competition and regulatory economists, data analysts, and finance professionals. Together, we work on some of the most exciting sectors in the UK – whether it’s the BBC, TV, broadband, mobile, online services, or the wireless airwaves powering the latest tech devices.

During the work experience week, you will conduct desk research and create a presentation on a topic related to Ofcom’s work. At the end of the week, you will have the chance to present your findings to members of Ofcom’s Economics and Analytics Group.

You will also have the opportunity to attend various discussions and training sessions hosted by the Economics and Analytics Group, allowing you to expand your knowledge, and connect with colleagues at every level, from graduates and interns to directors.

How the scheme works

Depending on their preference, successful applicants will work in either our London or Manchester office from 13th to 17th July 2026.

We ask that candidates identify their office preference in their application. Students will attend the office in person during the week.

Work experience students will be refunded for food/travel expenses of up to £10 per day.

Necessary requirements

This work experience is for students who are currently in Year 12 (England and Wales), S5 (Scotland) or Year 13 (Northern Ireland).

No prior knowledge, skills, or experience is needed for this work experience. However, our preference is that the candidate has a real interest in economics and is considering studying economics in the future.

The application process

To be considered for the work experience week, you will need to complete your application by 23.59 on Thursday 7th May 2026. This is the only stage of the application process - students will be selected based on their responses to these questions. We will not be conducting interviews.

Our processes prioritise accessibility and inclusivity. If you need information in an alternative format or have specific preferences, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible, and by no later than 23.59 on Monday 4th May 2026, to allow us to process your request.

Inclusivity Statement

Ofcom has a clear mission: to make communications work for everyone.  To be able to deliver on this, we want our organisation to reflect the diversity of background, experience, upbringing and thought that exists across the UK.  We aim to recruit from the widest pool of candidates possible – no matter your social background, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, or disability. We also warmly welcome applicants who are returning to the workforce after a break – for whatever reason. If you have taken time away and are ready to rejoin, we look forward to reviewing your application.

Where positions are listed as full-time, we remain open to reduced hours, part-time arrangements, job shares, and other flexible working options. From day one, we champion flexible work arrangements to accommodate individual needs. You can read more about our Rewards, Benefits and Well-being on our careers page.

Our recruitment processes prioritise accessibility and inclusivity. If you need adjustments, information in an alternative format, or prefer to apply in a different way, please contact us at [email protected] or call 0330 912 1378.

As a Disability Confident Leader, we offer interviews to disabled applicants who meet essential criteria for advertised roles. Learn more about this scheme here.  https://careers.ofcom.org.uk/careers/how-we-hire/
