Job Title: Director of Short-Term Trading Power & Gas

Location: London

Department: Power and Gas Trading

Reports To: VP Global Power

Role Overview

The Director of Short Term Trading ( Power & Gas ) is responsible for leading the company’s real-time and intra-day trading activities, optimizing short-term profitability, and managing exposure in highly volatile energy markets. This role requires deep expertise in power and natural gas markets, including market structure, pricing dynamics, and regulatory frameworks. The ideal candidate will drive trading strategy, leverage data-driven decision-making, and lead a team of traders to capitalize on short-term market opportunities. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in intraday, day-ahead, and balancing markets, as well as the ability to navigate market complexities, manage risk, and drive profitability. The Director will also play a critical role in supporting the business’s energy transition strategies and ensuring compliance with market regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Trading Strategy and Execution

  • Develop and implement short-term trading strategies to optimize profitability and manage risk across European power and gas markets.
  • Monitor market developments, including pricing signals, supply-demand dynamics, grid constraints and regulatory changes, to inform tactical trading decisions.
  • Ensure optimal participation in intraday, day-ahead, and balancing markets, leveraging arbitrage and optimising assets.
  • Identify and capture arbitrage opportunities across different markets, hubs, and timeframes

Team Leadership

  • Oversee an established team of skilled traders, fostering a high-performance culture and encouraging continuous professional development.
  • Utilize data analytics, forecasting models, and trading algorithms to improve decision-making
  • Set performance targets, provide regular feedback with team leaders, and ensure alignment with broader company goals.
  • Recruit and retain top trading talent to maintain a competitive edge.

Market and Risk Management

  • Collaborate with risk management teams to monitor exposures, set limits, and ensure trading activities align with the company’s risk appetite, whilst maintaining operational resilience
  • Evaluate trading performance using key metrics and analytics, adjusting strategies as necessary to maximize returns.
  • Work closely with the risk management team to assess portfolio exposure and adjust positions accordingly.
  • Maintain strong relationships with exchanges, counterparties, and grid operators to ensure seamless trading operations.

Innovation and Technology

  • Drive the adoption of advanced analytics, algorithmic trading tools, and AI-based solutions to enhance trading efficiency and responsiveness.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to ensure trading platforms are robust, efficient, and aligned with market needs.

Regulatory Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure all trading activities adhere to relevant regulations, including REMIT, MiFID II, and other market rules.
  • Prepare and present performance reports to senior management and stakeholders, providing actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Represent the company in industry forums and regulatory discussions, advocating for policies that support market liquidity and efficiency.

Key Requirements

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in power and gas trading, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of success in short-term trading across European markets, including intraday, day-ahead, and balancing markets.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate market volatility and deliver consistent profitability.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop high-performing teams.
  • Deep understanding of European power and gas market structures, regulatory frameworks, and grid operations.
  • Expertise in risk management, including hedging strategies and portfolio optimization.
  • Proficiency in trading platforms, market analytics tools, and algorithmic trading.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to represent the company externally.
  • Proficiency in trading systems, market analytics tools and programming skills ( Python, SQL, VBA) is a plus

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Energy, Economics, Finance, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Energy Trader, Advanced Risk Management) are an advantage.

Languages

  • Fluency in English; additional European languages are a plus
