Job Description
The Program Excellence team provides strategic and thought leadership to Project, Program, and Portfolio Management for the Combat Mission Systems (CMS) business area with annual sales of approximately $3B and over 200 program managers. As the Director of Program Excellence, this role will oversee the Project Management capability for CMS and provide strategic leadership of Program Management Processes, Tools, and Measures. The Director of Program Excellence will report to the Deputy VP/GM of the CMS business.
Because this role involves a combination of collaborative/in-person and independent work, it will take the form of a hybrid work format, with time split between working onsite and remotely (averaging 3 days onsite weekly).
For this position, we will consider someone working out of any one of the major Combat Mission Systems locations: York PA, Sterling Heights MI, Louisville KY, or Minneapolis MN.
This role includes the following responsibilities:
- Grounded in technical expertise within project management and project methodologies, serve as the primary interface with the CMS program manager community to provide program management expertise and assist with program planning and execution
- Provide oversight, management, and expertise to existing program management processes and best practices to meet the needs of the business and to improve and streamline all facets of program management
- Provide thought and execution leadership to the development and deployment of tool sets to automate and/or error proof Program Management administrative tasks
- Collaborate with functions to lead improvements to our business processes and tools
- Track progress to financial, schedule, technical, and/or new business performance objectives against all major projects
- Continuously improve, maintain, and manage CMS' Integrated Program Management/Business Management System processes
- Review and analyze Business Area level Program Management performance trends against industry benchmarks
- Support cross-sector and BAE Systems, Inc. program management initiatives
- Serve as a CMS expert on Lifecycle Management
- Serve as the main point of contact for the Program Management function for internal/external audits
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
- Bachelor's Degree and 12 years work experience or equivalent experience
- Mastery of the functional domain of Project Management and Standards, inclusive of theory, contemporary state of the practice, processes, and tools
- Proven project/program management skills and practical knowledge and experience in project management
- Experience leading large complex projects ($500M-$1B annually)
- PM supervisory experience
- Proven ability to demonstrate leadership through influence
- Functions well in a team environment
- Gains consensus, leads, influences, and ensures cross-discipline participation and feedback
- Proven ability to formulate a strategic vision, define and implement action plans to achieve goals
- Extensive technical and operational leadership experience
- Proven flexible management style to deal with diverse company cultures and individual differences
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions in an environment with some ambiguity and uncertainty
- Proven ability to manage changing expectations
- Experience with continuously improving a function
- Experience working across functional boundaries
- Substantial prior experience leading Root Cause Corrective Action exercises to determine TRUE root cause(s) of a defect or suboptimal outcome and subsequent preventative/corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence
- Demonstrated ability in guiding change management (especially cultural change) to work across a variety of functions, cultures, sites, geographic regions, and levels of management to deliver results to the business
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with experience presenting to senior leaders and customers in an accurate, concise, and understandable manner
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
- Master's Degree
- PM Certification
- Experience in large Defense Contracting programs
- Significant budgeting and costing experience
- Contemporary design/development program experience
- Contemporary stage gate and design review experience
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $169630 - $288370
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
