This role is a maternity cover for our Director of International Legal, commencing at the end of March / beginning of April. This pivotal position leads on international legal matters, which ranges from drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts for complex commercial transactions, including brand partner and vendor agreements in various international territories, to providing guidance on competition law, managing global data privacy compliance, and addressing ad hoc employment law matters.

What is a day in the life of the Director of International Legal?

  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts for complex commercial transactions, including brand partner contracts and vendor agreements in various international locations.
  • Advise on competition law issues.
  • Manage global data privacy compliance.
  • Advise on ad hoc employment law issues.
  • Advise on international legal entities and setup of new international entities, as well as ongoing company secretarial matters.
  • Find creative solutions in negotiations to address impasses and close deals. 
  • Advise internal business clients on company policies, negotiation strategy, and legal issues and risks.
  • Advise on international implications of prospective M&A or other transactions.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues from other teams internationally, including finance, operations, IT, and ecommerce management.
  • Exercise sound judgment when negotiating key business and legal terms that balances business objectives and legal risks.
  • Manage compliance of overseas regulatory programs including anti- corruption, anti-bribery, selective distribution, import/export.
  • Assist on other legal department projects as needed.

What will I need to thrive in this role?

  • Law degree from top program.
  • Qualification to practice as a solicitor in England and Wales.
  • Familiarity with EU and UK competition law.
  • 7 or more years of demonstrated success in a commercial legal role in either a law firm or in-house environment (i.e. at least 7 years PQE).
  • Dedication to ethical and honest practice of law.
  • Demonstrated ability to pick things up quickly and work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and without ego.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to balance speed and depth.
  • Commitment to internal and external client service, even in tough negotiations.
  • Enjoy finding creative solutions.
  • Ability to work independently but knowing when to ask for help or a second opinion.
  • Curiosity for how AI and data can create efficiencies and pioneering solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience negotiating complex commercial contracts.
  • Experience advising on international legal entities and setup of new international entities.
  • Experience at a top international law firm as well as in-house at an international organisation.
  • Exposure to or familiarity with the one or more of the following areas of law: international trade, import/export, anti-corruption/anti-bribery and data privacy.
  • Experience with cost-effective management of outside legal resources.
