Design Engineer - Pavements
Covering the South of England
Competitive salary, bonus + company car

Our vision is to Create Better Places and Futures for Everyone; Socially, Environmentally and Economically. For us, these aren’t words on paper. This is our powerful and purposeful statement that guides our actions and ignites a passion in every one of us. We’ve been paving the way since 1890. Our passion for our products and customers has made us a Superbrand that is synonymous with quality; supplying prestigious landmarks such as Trafalgar Square, while also caring for the environment and communities in which we operate.

In our Commercial Design and Engineering Team we are dedicated to creating innovative and sustainable design solutions that set new industry standards which you can see at Battersea Power Station and Victoria Square in Birmingham, to name just a couple. It is in this innovative team that we have an opportunity for a Technical/Design & Engineering consultant, referred to internally as a Pavement Engineer.

So, what’s the mission?

You will be a part of our Design and Engineering team, working closely with our external sales teams, becoming the ‘go-to’ for technical design advice.

Working as part of our specialist Design & Engineering team, you'll collaborate closely with colleagues across Specification, Key Contractor Management, Account Management and the wider Sales team to provide technical solutions that help customers achieve their commercial project goals.

This is not a desk job, instead you will be out and about alongside the external sales team, to meet with our wide range of customers and internal stakeholders. The key to success will be your ability to balance your technical knowledge whilst communicating design advice in an engaging and consultative way; adding value to projects and securing sales with your specialist advice.

If you love variety, you’ll be pleased to hear that your customers would include, but not be limited to, landscape architects, consultant engineers, main contractor design teams, local authorities and housing developers – a real chance for you to network and build relationships across different clients.

You'll develop engineering-led pavement solutions for a wide variety of commercial developments, supporting projects from concept through to construction. Your advice will influence material selection, pavement design, installation methodology and long-term performance, ensuring customers achieve compliant, sustainable and commercially effective outcomes.

This is a consultative role where you'll become the trusted technical expert for both internal colleagues and external customers.

Your expertise will also be sought out to create technical proposals, build and deliver engineering-focused CPD presentations and provide support to the resolution of on-site issues. Your natural curiosity and eye on future innovation will be a great asset as you support the development of new products, systems and design methodology. Developing a network of contacts and relationships within the engineering community is essential as you share your knowledge and best practice and come up with new ideas.

What are the mission-critical skills?

Previous success has shown us we need a commercial thinker who can build relationships, influence, and has a passion for their craft.

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering, or be working towards an appropriate professional qualification.
  • Experience in pavement, highways, public realm or hard landscaping design.
  • Good knowledge of pavement engineering principles including modular pavements, permeable paving and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
  • An understanding of relevant industry standards such as DMRB, Specification for Highway Works, BS 7533 and CIRIA SuDS guidance.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the confidence to deliver technical CPD seminars.
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to develop practical engineering solutions that add value for customers.
  • A full UK driving licence.

You may have worked in an engineering role but have a passion for a more customer-facing career or have experience in a Technical Sales role that hasn’t quite struck the balance on the technical and design aspects you love; this role is the perfect blend of the two.

So, what’s in it for you?
This is an opportunity to influence commercial and public realm projects while developing your career with an industry leader. You'll enjoy the autonomy of working from home, the support of an experienced national team and the opportunity to apply your engineering expertise on projects that genuinely create better places for people to live, work and enjoy.

Benefits:

  • 34 days per annum of the equivalent in hours (inclusive of bank holidays)
  • 37.5 hrs per week
  • Health care cash plan – support with Dental, Optical, Prescription costs and many more!
  • Family leave policies (Maternity, Paternity, and Adoption) available from your very first day of employment
  • 5% employer matched pension scheme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Employee discount on Marshalls and Marley products
  • Retailer discounts
  • Marshalls Wellbeing Centre – move, money & mind
  • Share purchase scheme
  • Life assurance
