Who we are:
Apollo is a specialised independent (re)insurer, established in 2009, to deliver top-tier products and services to clients, brokers, and capital partners at Lloyd’s. The name "Apollo" was inspired by the achievements of one of its founding investors, Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon in 1969. Together with Jim Hays, Neil identified an opportunity to create a unique service provider within Lloyd’s.
Since its inception, Apollo has significantly broadened its portfolio of insurance solutions. This includes Apollo 1969’s traditional and specialty lines, ibott 1971’s innovative sharing economy products, and managing agency services at Lloyd’s through our Strategic Partner Syndicates. Today, Apollo continues to grow with team of over 270 professionals dedicated to fulfilling the company’s mission of enabling a resilient and sustainable world.
“We attract and retain a diverse range of talent by fostering an inclusive, equitable team environment where individuals from all backgrounds have opportunities to grow, succeed, and contribute. We empower our teams to achieve excellence and drive forward-thinking solutions, aiming to enable a resilient and sustainable world.” - David Ibeson, Group CEO

Your Role:

Apollo is establishing a set of truly innovative data services to propel its business to the next level.  We are capturing, transforming, and analysing a huge variety of data through a modern data platform to produce fabulously rich insight for our business.
This role is part of our Data Solutions team at the centre of our Apollo data family.  It will involve getting hands on with our data and working directly with colleagues across the business to deliver the advice, insights and hands on modelling they need.  You will bring the best of your data science and business engagement skills to deliver this and progress our objectives of “data first decision making” and establishing data science as a differentiating business service.

The data space is ever evolving, and along with getting to know and support the wider Data team’s current responsibilities of data governance, engineering and insights, there will also be lots of opportunity to learn new skills and try innovative and cutting-edge solutions along the way!

What you’ll do:

Working directly with our business and project teams, you will be in the perfect place to build relationships to understand their challenges and be the trusted partner that recommends how data science can help. You will then explore their data and, by applying advanced analytics, produce difference making business outcomes. You will be seen as one of the leaders in our citizen analyst community, sharing your knowledge and bringing your colleagues on the data science journey.

The role responsibilities include:

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build relationships with our business colleagues, listening to their requirements and providing the benefit of your analytical expertise.
  • Be comfortable examining and profiling raw data, operational systems, and business processes to get to the essence of what is needed.
  • Be able to communicate the Apollo approach to data science to ensure project teams have a clear idea of the options and solutions available.
  • Regularly communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders on the progress of analytical tasks and projects and take feedback on board.
  • Actively looking to identify opportunities to improve the business using data science.
  • Be a leading voice in our Data Science community and promote the sharing of learning, skills and experience among the wider group of Apollo “citizen” analysts.

Artificial Intelligence, Modelling and Advanced Analytical Techniques

  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover patterns, trends, and insights that can inform business strategies.
  • Develop, implement and maintain machine learning algorithms and models to address business cases in all parts of the business and its functions.
  • Apply creative problem solving to come up with both tactical and strategic solutions to colleagues’ problems, helping to provide commercial value in the short term and working with the wider Data team to implement robust and sustainable solutions.
  • Apply feature engineering, data cleansing and preparation techniques to unlock new potential in our data and help build cases for more strategic data engineering.
  • Discover and evaluate 3rd party data sets for commercial value and where possible assess potential usage elsewhere in the business.

Data Science Lifecycle and Operations

  • Apply good management of data sets for training, testing and in-life monitoring of deliverables and promote the value of traceability and governance in model development.
  • Use best practice to generate recommendations for continual monitoring, revision and improvement of models and other analytical deliverables embedded in business processes and systems.
  • Support the democratisation of delivered models into support and ownership of wider business teams.

Consultation and Innovation

  • Stay informed of the latest advancements in data science to identify opportunities for innovation and keep colleagues aware of how these developments can help them.
  • Demonstrate thought leadership in data science by contributing to team policies and processes that drive consistency and efficiency across the business and minimise misuse and data risk.
  • Discover and evaluate 3rd party data sets for commercial value and where possible assess potential usage elsewhere in the business.

Active Member of the Data Family

  • Work with the wider Data Solutions team to design and build data visualisations and reporting to effectively communicate results to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to prioritisation of work by thinking strategically and communicating regularly with the rest of the Data Solutions team.
  • Comply with the team’s work tracking tools and process and version control to make sure all finished work is supportable.
  • Work within our data governance processes to implement common data definitions, best practices and improve the quality of our data assets.

What we are looking for:

  • Significant experience in data science and advanced analytical techniques.
  • Significant experience with scripting languages such as python, SQL and R running either locally or on a Spark based platform (Databricks preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of relevant statistical/ML libraries.
  • Strong knowledge of model development and testing approaches and methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge of model versioning, productionisation and in-life monitoring approaches and methodologies.
  • Experience in the insurance industry, financial service or other regulated industry, preferably in the Lloyd’s Market.
  • Good stakeholder management skills including requirements capture and expectation management with complementary excellent written and oral communication skills.

What you will get in return:
Our compensation package is designed to attract top talent. In addition to a fair and attractive salary, this role offers a discretionary bonus and a comprehensive range of benefits, including 31 days of annual leave, a non-contributory pension and private medical insurance.
Our Commitment to Inclusion:
Apollo is a growing and diverse team of empowered and passionate experts who focus on bringing innovation, data driven decision making and collaboration to every relationship and every risk. To meet the needs of a demanding global insurance market, we need a diverse workforce that truly understands the international communities we serve.
That is why we're focused on developing diverse talent at every level; inclusion and diversity means more to us than just chasing a target and we are committed to supporting and celebrating difference. Our people are at the heart of our business which is why we value the diversity of thought and talent of every member of our team.
We offer a range of support and run a programme of events and training that recognise the challenges and opportunities relating to diversity.

At Apollo, hybrid and flexible working is fully embraced and we do not see the benefit of presenteeism. We understand that no two colleagues are alike, and as such we support the ability to remain agile and achieve a home and work balance to best suit business and personal commitments.
