SPC oversees firms and individuals (supervision), creates and reviews the rules by which they operate (policy) and identifies and remedies ineffective competition in markets (competition).

Sitting in the Consumer Investments (CI) directorate, the CI Market Analysis and Policy (MAP) department leads policy, strategy, and risk identification across the consumer investments market through four specialist teams focused on market insights, market analysis, advice policy, and distribution policy.

Role responsibilities 

  • Provide expert technical support on complex issues to shape high-profile policy, supervisory work, and external communications that influence the financial sector

  • Maintain sector knowledge and analyse market developments to identify emerging risks and drive regulatory strategies that protect consumers

  • Lead and deliver high-profile, technically complex projects to create meaningful outcomes for firms, consumers, and the wider market

  • Build strong networks with key stakeholders to positively influence the sector and represent the FCA at external events

  • Provide leadership across teams by guiding colleagues, assuring quality, and sharing knowledge to strengthen FCA capability

  • Collaborate with technical specialists and senior leaders to shape consumer investment strategy and deliver better outcomes for consumers

Skills required 

Minimum:  

  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge of the products, services and business models involved in the distribution of investment products to retail clients, as well as the corresponding regulatory framework

  • Proven experience of leading and delivering complex analytical projects, and influencing stakeholders at all levels internally and externally

  • Prior experience of supporting, training and coaching others, with strong communication skills, and the ability to explain complex issues clearly, succinctly and sensitively to different audiences verbally and in writing

  • Proven ability to think clearly and rigorously when analysing complex qualitative and quantitative information to reach robust, evidence-based practical conclusions and recommendations

  • Strategic and pragmatic thinker, with the ability and understanding to make connections and develop innovative solutions and recommendations

  • Comfortable working in a proactive manner with the ability to self-manage and prioritise own resource

  • Excellent influencing skills with ability to understand your audience and persuade with well-reasoned arguments and adapting as appropriate

  • Ability to work collaboratively, proactively identifying and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and colleagues to build trust and achieve positive outcomes

  • Strong judgement and professionalism when communicating externally, with the ability to balance the need for collaboration with confidentiality
