About the Company:

Capi helps businesses in Africa pay their international suppliers. We’ve raised over $18m from Creandum, Y Combinator, General Catalyst, Firstminute, Janngo, Kima Ventures, and some great angels from Revolut, Checkout, Stripe, Onfido, and Remitly.

Capi was founded by Mitch Riley, Scott Liddle, and Tom Watson. Mitch and Scott were COO/CFO/GC and CRO/CMO at Taptap Send, a remittance unicorn, and have spent two decades between them working in emerging markets. Tom is a third-time founder having founded Hubble and P4SD.

Role Overview

You will join our 10-person team at a fast-growing seed-stage fintech. We’re on a mission to transform how $670 billion in cross-border business payments are made each year in Africa.

Reporting to the Compliance Officer / MLRO, you will become the second member of Capi’s compliance team and will be responsible for owning all operational elements of our compliance program, ensuring that our day-to-day compliance activities are completed in a timely manner and in line with internal policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the operational elements of our compliance and financial crime function, including onboarding customers in line with our policies, reviewing screening and monitoring alerts and responding to information requests from our banks

  • Proactively identify ways to improve and streamline existing processes in relation to all aspects of compliance operations and collaborate with other business teams as needed, whilst ensuring that regulatory requirements are met

  • Become Capi’s subject matter expert for onboarding customers across all geographies, with a detailed understanding of UK regulatory requirements including those as outlined in the JMLSG Guidelines and the Money Laundering Regulations

  • Update, test and optimise external vendor tools for onboarding, screening and transaction monitoring, in conjunction with the MLRO

  • Escalate suspicious activity to the MLRO, and support them with reviewing and submitting both internal and external SARs as needed

  • Support the Compliance Officer with due diligence documentation relating to Capi’s growth plans including with other banks, PSPs, and regulators

Qualifications
  • Fluent in English and French

  • 2-5 years’ work experience in a compliance operations role, ideally in a regulated Fintech

  • Detailed understanding of the regulatory requirements with regard to KYB, CDD and EDD in the UK

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally

  • Be a skilful and determined problem solver, embracing the challenge of applying local regulatory expectations to developing markets such as Africa

Nice-to-haves
  • Knowledge of or experience working with Canadian AML regulations

  • Relevant Compliance and AML qualifications

  • “No task too small” mindset

  • Previous experience at early-stage VC-backed start-up, or at top-tier consultancy, etc.

  • Previous experience working in or with emerging markets

  • You care about our mission and believe the current situation facing African businesses is unfair

  • Hungry for high pace, rapid growth, broad exposure, and autonomy

  • Ability to understand other foreign languages

Additional Information
  • This is a full-time position with competitive salary, share options, and benefits

  • We require 3 days a week in our London office

  • Start date: Dec / Jan (ideally within the next 3 months; we are aware that a notice period may need to be fulfilled, and can adjust accordingly)

Capi is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes candidates from diverse backgrounds.
