Company Description

The Learning Generation Initiative – formerly the Education Commission – sits as a team within EDC’s International Development Division. The Education Commission was convened by a multilateral coalition in 2015 and served as a global initiative encouraging greater progress on Sustainable Development Goal 4 – ensuring inclusive and quality education and promoting lifelong learning for all. The Commission helped create a pathway for reform and increased investment in education by mobilizing strong evidence and analysis while engaging with world leaders, policymakers, and researchers. The legacy of the Commission’s work has been taken up by Education Development Center under the Learning Generation Initiative (LGI) which is continuing the Commission’s agenda.

The mission of LGI is to empower the people within and connected to education systems to enable all children to be learning within a generation. We work with governments and others to strengthen and create a more collaborative education workforce, improve system delivery and increase investment in school meals. We have a strong focus on addressing marginalization, building system resilience and facilitating cross- sectoral collaboration. Our approach is Analyse – Act – Amplify, we work with partners and governments to undertake research, policy engagement, co-design and testing, and to influence collaborative action at all levels.

Job Description

The Communications Manager will lead on the development and implementation of LGI’s communications strategy, working closely with the team, helping to amplify our vision, give visibility to our impact, and strengthen our partnerships. This role is central to building LGI’s voice across platforms, engaging key audiences, and ensuring our work is communicated with clarity and impact.

 

SCOPE OF SERVICES

This role would operate as part of a virtual, international team. The scope of services include:

  • Update and execute an integrated communications plan that aligns with LGI’s mission, goals, and evolving priorities and strengthens the strategic positioning of LGI with key audiences to catalyse urgent action around SDG4
  • Work across LGI’s three transformation areas – Education Workforce Initiative, Systems Delivery and School Health and Nutrition - develop and implement communications plans for each and provide support for each workstream that highlights impactful activities, bolsters strategic partnerships, and promotes work outputs such as research reports and toolkits in a manner that will ultimately contribute to LGI’s impact and reach
  • Create clear, compelling narratives that highlight LGI’s specific offer, thought leadership and practical work in global education.
  • Manage multi-media content development and digital communications, including drafting and posting updates to LinkedIn, creating newsletters, regular blog updates, and curating engaging visual and written materials, being conscious of including diverse voices and sharing content in an accessible way.
    • Across platforms and content, intentionally centre voices from the Global South.
    • Ensure work product is cognizant of emerging trends in development, international education and communications best practice.
    • Integrate the voice and experience of LGI Champions to amplify our impact and reach
  • Manage suppliers for example copy editors, editors, designers, illustrators, video editors and photographers and ensure they support LGI as needed and deliver on time and quality.
  • Manage LGI’s mailing list and ensure compliance with data-protection laws and good practice across jurisdictions
  • Collaborate with partners to align messaging and coordinate joint communications efforts for events, research dissemination, and campaigns.
  • Provide support for LGI’s presence at key global and regional events, including event management, preparing speaker briefs, talking points, power point presentations and event summaries.
  • Monitor and report on engagement and performance across communications channels (mainly LinkedIn and own website), using analytics and audience insights to refine strategies and adapt tactics as needed.
  • Support with media relations as required.
  • Collaborate with the Education Development Centre central communications team to ensure work is cross-promoted internally and externally.
  • Manage the maintenance of the LGI website (via a 3rd party supplier) – ensuring all updates are complete such as new resources, blogs, team bios and website maintenance.
  • Contribute to the continuous evolution of LGI’s communications approach, ensuring messages resonate with policymakers, funders, and key stakeholders.
  • Be an active member of the LGI team.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years’ experience in communications, advocacy, or a related field, ideally in education, development, or policy environments.
  • Strong project manager with excellent organizational skills, able to manage multiple projects and balance competing priorities.
  • Very clear writing and editing skills, with an ability to tailor content for diverse audiences and formats.
  • Proven track record managing digital platforms and creating engaging online content.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with partners and collaborators.
  • Able to operate strategically but also with attention to detail.
  • Enthusiasm, dedication, creativity, innovation, can do attitude, able to deal with ambiguity at times.
  • Familiarity with global education issues and a genuine interest in transforming education systems for better outcomes.
  • Experience working in low- and middle-income countries.
  • English language fluency a must.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 360 products, in particular PPT and Excel. Ability to use InDesign and Adobe is a plus.
