Job Summary
We are looking for a Manager to join our Cloud Development Team and help the team develop and deploy services. Working closely with our colleagues in Platform Engineering, Datacentre Operations and Product Development teams, you will be responsible for the engineers who build clouds and services on our fleet of cutting-edge AI systems. As part of our Platform Engineering organisation, you will be involved in the cloud integration, validation, performance benchmarking, optimisation, and development of our high-performance AI solutions. This is not a hands-on role but it requires a solid background in cloud infrastructure, HPC, IT or software engineering. This will allow you to understand the work of the team and collaborate clearly with other stakeholders about it.
You may have been working in an IT organisation, a datacentre, a cloud provider or as a developer of orchestration or cloud services. No previous line-management experience is required, but you should be ready to make the move from individual contributor.
The Platform Engineering team at Graphcore
The Platform Engineering team build Graphcore products into large-scale AI solutions for our customers, and qualify them for our customers. The Cloud Development team (part of Platform) is responsible for providing such systems to both internal users via private clouds and customers via our own public clouds. Often the internal systems will be using and developing pre-release hardware and software, so it’s vital you are comfortable with unproven components.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Line management of engineers in the Cloud Development team. This includes day-to-day support, regular reviews, mentoring and career development.
- Lead by example in positive, constructive and pragmatic approaches to problem solving.
- Translation of asks, technical requirements and other business needs into deliverables for the team.
- Ownership of delivery relating to Cloud Development deliverables.
- Tracking and reporting on the progress of the work to the broader Platform team and other stakeholders.
- Collaborating with internal customers and stakeholders in the wider Graphcore business to understand their needs and the technical integration pain points.
- Helping to establish best practice within the Cloud Development team and support the engineers in delivering against it.
Skills and Experience [ALL REQUIRED]
- Excellent problem-solving skills evidenced by numerous previous challenging experiences.
- Strong inter-personal skills. You need to have a passion for doing good engineering and be able to motivate others to do the same in a highly changeable industry.
- Good communication and presentation skills, and experience dealing with senior stakeholders and end-users of IT or cloud services.
- Evidence of mentoring junior colleagues, leading teams or deliveries, and taking responsibility for large work items.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in a relevant subject.
- Solid infrastructure or IT experience with a proven track record of delivering technical output as an individual contributor for at least 5 years during your career.
- Experience specifying, scoping, estimating and detailing work plans in an AGILE and SCRUM framework, including priorities, risks, issues, impacts and constraints.
- Experience with Continuous Integration or testing pipelines using GitLab, GitHub or similar.
- A solid understanding of the technologies underpinning cloud services: e.g. tenancies, virtualisation, containerisation, block storage, resource management and monitoring.
- Experience with solutions for monitoring and observability.
Desirable but not required:
- Line management experience of engineers working in a similar field.
- Experience or good understanding of Terraform, OpenTofu, ansible, Kubernetes, SLURM (or similar).
- Experience or good understanding of AI or Machine-Learning workloads, their networking and storage requirements and how they relate to necessary resources.
- Experience working in HPC environments.
- Experience working in a customer-facing support environment for cloud or IT services.
- Experience working in an engineering team supporting the development of hardware products.
- 8 years experience working in a related engineering role.
