Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson MedTech | Orthopaedics are looking for a Business Development Manager in Spine for London and the South East Region.

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of DePuy Synthes and your employment would be governed by DePuy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by DePuy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.

Role summary
  • You will lead identification, evaluation, negotiation, and execution of commercial opportunities that grow spine revenue and strategic position.
  • Typical scope includes strategic partnerships, distribution deals, new product and business launches.
Core responsibilities & areas of expertise
  • Market analysis: segment growth, competitive landscape, pricing, and reimbursement impacts for spine products.

  • Business cases: Build financial models, commercial forecasts, and strategic rationale to secure internal investment.

  • Deal execution: Lead term-sheet negotiation, contract coordination with legal, and commercial closing.

  • Clinical strategy: Align evidence generation, KOL engagement and clinical trials to support partner deals.

  • Launch support: Translate deals into go-to-market plans and ensure smooth product introduction.

Technical and soft skills
  • Strategic thinking: Ability to prioritize opportunities by strategic fit and return.

  • Communication: Concise executive-level presentations and persuasive stakeholder influence.

  • Project management: Drive complex, multi-stakeholder deals to closure.

  • Legal/compliance literacy: Understand commercial contract basics and healthcare regulatory constraints.

  • Data-driven decision-making: Use KPIs and market data to manage pipeline and prioritise

What you will bring:
  • Experience in medical device or life sciences commercial roles; exposure to spine product categories preferred.

  • Clinical familiarity with spine surgery workflows, products, and terminology (cervical/lumbar fusion, Intrabody devices, navigation, biologics).

  • Experience supporting OR cases or working alongside surgeons.

  • Familiarity with hospital procurement, tender processes, and reimbursement pathways.

  • Commercial track record: Demonstrated history of sourcing and closing commercial agreements (distributors, partnerships, channel deals, licensing).

  • Negotiation: Comfortable leading commercial negotiations and drafting basic term sheets.

  • Stakeholder management: Experience working cross-functionally (sales, clinical affairs, regulatory, legal, finance).

  • Travel: Willingness to travel to customers, partners, and conferences (typical 50%+).

  • Compliance: Understands healthcare compliance constraints (sunshine laws, anti-kickback exposure) and company policies.

Preferred / ideal experience:
  • Spine specialization: strong experience primarily focused on spine—product, clinical, or commercial experience in deformity, trauma, degenerative, minimally invasive, or motion preservation segments.

  • Clinical familiarity: Comfortable with spine procedures, surgeon workflows, and clinical evidence requirements; prior OR experience or clinical background is a strong plus.

  • Regulatory & reimbursement knowledge: Familiarity with regulatory pathways, coding and reimbursement drivers that affect adoption.

  • Network: Established relationships with spine KOLs, hospital procurement, distributors, and industry partners.
