An exciting opportunity awaits you as Brakes & Air Systems Engineer in our Rolling Stock team. The Brakes and Air Systems Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting of braking systems and pneumatic (air) components across Eurostar cl373 and cl374 fleet of trains. This role ensures that all braking systems meet safety regulations, operational performance standards, and customer specifications. The engineer works closely with wider engineering team as well as with suppliers and design authorities for the systems.

This is a permanent role based on site at our Temple Mills depot in Leyton. Hybrid working is available, with the expectation you attend site 4 days per week.

Requirements

We’re looking for someone to:

  • Act as Eurostar’s technical specialist for brakes and air systems across the Class 373 and Class 374 fleets, ensuring all systems meet safety, reliability and regulatory standards.
  • Lead investigations into braking and pneumatic system issues, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Optimise and improve maintenance strategies, including monitoring reliability, managing obsolescence risks and supporting overhaul programmes.
  • Work closely with suppliers, design authorities and internal engineering teams to resolve technical issues and ensure robust system performance.
  • Provide expert technical input into maintenance planning, project delivery and system upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with evolving safety, sustainability and regulatory requirements across all braking and air system activities.
  • Support documentation updates, risk assessments and technical decision‑making related to these safety‑critical systems.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance fleet availability, operational performance and lifecycle management.
  • Participate in the on‑call engineering rota, responding to safety incidents and operational needs as required.

You'll need...

  • Relevant engineering qualification (HNC/D or Degree) with proven expertise in rolling stock braking and pneumatic systems, including design, maintenance, testing and system improvements.
  • Strong technical knowledge of pneumatics, electro‑pneumatics, mechanical and regenerative braking, system integration, and safety‑critical braking requirements.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in rolling stock engineering, with the ability to lead technical investigations, diagnose complex faults and interpret engineering drawings and standards.
  • Solid understanding of railway regulations and standards (e.g. TSI, EN, UIC, ISO) and experience supporting certification, homologation and engineering changes.
  • Skilled in reliability and maintenance engineering, including FMEA, failure investigations, obsolescence management, and collaborating with suppliers and performance teams.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills, with the ability to work cross‑functionally, use Microsoft Office effectively, and operate in both English (advanced) and French (desirable).
