Backend Engineer - Mid level (Berlin-based) (m/f/x)
Aklamio is looking for a Backend Engineer based in Berlin to strengthen one of our Engineering teams and play a key role in further developing our Incentive Platform. You should bring deep expertise in Ruby and Ruby on Rails and a strong track record of solving complex technical challenges in scalable production environments. You combine technical excellence with product thinking, understanding not just how to build, but why.

What you’ll do
- Join one of our Engineering teams to develop and improve all our products, services, and sites around our SaaS Incentive Platform.
- Take the lead on feature initiatives and be directly responsible for customer and business value. Do so by closely collaborating within your team and with different experts across the company.
- You care deeply about the technical health of the system owned by your team and are always driven to improve it.
- As a Mid-Level Engineer in the team, you make use of your experience and guide your teammates to better outcomes when you see the opportunity.
- In collaboration with other teams like Data or DevOps, you work on improving our overall architecture and infrastructure.
What we are looking for
- At least 3 years of Backend Development Experience in Ruby / Rails.
- Technical excellence: In-depth knowledge of various programming languages, frameworks, and tools, including Ruby on Rails, React, Docker, Gitlab CI, Prometheus, Sentry, Logstash, MySQL, Redis, Kafka, and others, and experience in building complex modular systems with them.
- Problem Solver: You know how to keep cool under pressure and come up with pragmatic solutions fast and in collaboration with others.
- Web Engineer: You have a good understanding of web technologies in general and know how to build secure and robust applications.
- Dealing with Legacy: You know how to handle and modernize a legacy system, especially how to modularize a monolithic system.
- Product-minded Engineer: You are interested in driving initiatives from beginning to end, caring deeply about the value you will create.
- Communication Expert: You can discuss technical problems and solution options with your team and various experts, to synchronize with stakeholders, and find the right words in challenging situations.
- AI-Native: You know how to work with AI and use it to your advantage, while at the same time, you know its limitations and weak spots.
- Agile Development experience working as part of agile development teams that frequently release with confidence.
- Best Practices: You know how to test, deploy, use version control, linting, logging, and other related practices.

Our Interview Process
We follow a four-step interview process, designed to be transparent and fair:
- Initial Screening: Introductory call with our HR / Recruiting team to discuss your background, career goals, expectations, and to give you a first overview of Aklamio and the role.
- Live Technical Screening: A short technical session with one of our engineers where we work through a few basic coding exercises together. The goal is simply to verify core programming fundamentals and problem-solving skills.
- Live Coding Challenge: A longer live session with our engineers where we work together on a small backend application problem. You are encouraged to use AI tools during this session. We focus on how you structure solutions, collaborate, leverage AI effectively, and think about maintainable production code.
- Final Office Round: An on-site meeting with our VP Engineering and cross-functional stakeholders (e.g. Product, Customer Success). This round focuses on collaboration, communication, and how engineering work translates into customer and business value.
