Job Description:

Reporting to the VP In-force Management and Business Optimization the successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, developing and executing strategic initiatives that improve financial performance and optimize capital across our Sun Life Canada in-force businesses. This role is well suited to a finance professional with a curious mindset, strong business judgement, and a willingness to collaboratively explore new opportunities. This position offers significant scope across Canada Finance and gives high visibility to leadership with direct involvement in strategic decision making. The AVP will partner closely with the CFOs and AVPs of the Canadian business units, other functional areas including Canadian Finance, Actuarial, ALM, Risk, Tax and the Corporate Office, and external professionals, to identify and execute value-enhancing opportunities.

What you’ll be doing

  • Identify, assess and execute implementation of strategies to optimize financial performance of in-force businesses across Sun Life Canada.
  • Manage and advise on various deep dives in collaboration with business and functional areas to analyze business profitability, potential optimization opportunities and synergies across the Canadian businesses.
  • Collaborate with both internal partners and external partners -like reinsurers, investment banks- as applicable.
  • Lead financial analysis and development of capital related reinsurance arrangements and other strategic financial transactions.
  • Enhance financial management for legacy products, including both P&L and balance sheet items (capital, reserving, etc.) providing increased transparency on value drivers.
  • Conduct financial analysis and due diligence on acquisition and disposition opportunities to enhance financial returns
  • Build a high performing, engaged organization with a culture where team members can be their best.

What you’ll need to succeed

  • FCIA/FSA, CPA, CFA or MBA, with 10+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding of insurance company value drivers, including earnings, LICAT capital, ROE, balance sheet management and capital deployment.
  • Deep curiosity and ability to identify optimization opportunities within highly complex products and processes.
  • Proven ability to work within a complex, regulated environment and able to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Collaborative partner able to build strong relationships and work effectively through others to meet deliverables and timelines in a matrixed environment.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments where opportunities must be identified, assessed and developed from concept through execution, and not all paths are linear.
  • Exceptional people leadership experience, passion for fostering and developing high potential and diverse talent.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written with ability to present at multiple leadership tables and ability to translate complex technical analysis into simplified concepts.
  • Experience working in a diverse environment from a business as well as cultural perspective. 

As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
