Overall purpose of role:
The London Metal Exchange is the world centre for industrial metals trading. Most of the world’s non-ferrous metals business is conducted on the LME and the metals community uses the LME, a member of HKEX Group, as a venue to transfer or take on price risk, as a physical market of last resort and as the provider of transparent global reference prices.
The Sustainability and Physical Markets team (“SPM”) is responsible for the strategy, delivery, and operation of the LME’s physical market and sustainability activity. This incorporates both strategic development of all areas of the LME’s physical ecosystem including future commercialisation, sustainability, overall management of physical market relationships including producers of LME-listed brands, and the operation of the LME’s physical network including LME warehousing, operation of the LME approved brands list, LME responsible sourcing, and LMEpassport.
The SPM team is split into two closely linked sub-divisions, responsible for either development and strategic activities, or operational activities. This role sits on the operational side and will centre around ensuring the key systems (LMEsword and LMEpassport) are able to function day-to-day. The role will also cover general duties undertaken by the operational team, with the opportunity to develop the role beyond the systems utilised in SPM.
Responsibilities:
- Responsibility for day-to-day operation of the LMEsword operations:
- Integrate LMEsword into the SPM department (previously sat within a broader operations team, being moved into SPM as of 2025)
- Key point of contact for LMEsword related production issues or queries – engaging with a broad set of stakeholders such as LME members
- Ensure high levels of customer service are maintained throughout contact hours on LMEsword (9:00 – 17:00)
- Perform quarterly audit of internal users for LMEsword
- Monthly invoicing
- Annual rent endorsement from monitoring through to enforcement
- Participation in on-boarding / off-boarding meetings and adherence to the run-book
- Ensuring LMEsword is maintaining best possible practice, through identifying key change requests (“CRs”) to support future enhancements and ongoing running on the platform
- Ability to identify and track possible risks to the system
- Represent SPM and the platform at governance and project meetings
- Keeping all documentation (including user guides, FAQs and website information) is kept up to date
- Liaise closely with LME Clear team to ensure the matching process can occur on LMEsword
- Liaise internally and with senior management committees as required. Provide drafts or input to key written documents presented to Boards, senior management or externally, including policies, reporting and presentations
- Responsibility for day-to-day operation of the LMEpassport operations:
- Key point of contact for LMEpassport related production issues or queries
- Ensure the LMEpassport group mailbox is kept organised, passing queries across to relevant teams
- Perform quarterly audit of internal users for LMEpassport
- Working directly with the SPM development team, to ensure new change request and product launches are smoothly transitioned onto the platform
- Ability to identify and track possible risks to the system
Academic and Professional Qualifications Required:
- Education to degree level is not a mandatory requirement of this role but successful candidates will be expected to have a good level of general academics combined with relevant experience for the role
Required Knowledge and Level of Experience:
- Previous operational experience, with financial operational experience being preferred/ideal
- Good general computer knowledge essential being conversant in the normal standard Microsoft Office applications
Skills set and Core Competencies Required for Role:
- Practical experience working with the Microsoft Office Suite & Windows XP
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written
- Good understanding of operational process, and how it interacts with strategic priorities
- Confidence to follow up as required, obtaining information from multiple sources often under time pressure, to deliver work as requested
