Job Title:              Assistant Transport Manager

Location:              Preston

Hours:                   Full-time

Reporting to:      Transport Manager

Job Req:               R8340

Due to internal promotion, we are seeking to recruit an Assistant Transport Manager!

What is the role of a Assistant Transport Manager?

The Assistant Transport Manager works closely with the Preston site Transport Manager. The successful candidate will offer day to day support and management by working closely with the Transport Team and other onsite departments to ensure the smooth running of both the transport and warehouse operations.  Part of this role will be ensuring that costs are controlled and legal responsibilities discharged appropriately with all company policies and regulation adhered to.

Its worth noting, the day to day role of a driver at ForFarmers differs slightly to other driving roles in the market and as such, they can be faced with challenges you might not encounter when delivering to the likes of a supermarket or other business. Unlike general haulage, our drivers are the face of our business when delivering to farmers and customer, delivering not only the product we make and sell, but also a level of customer service when having face to face conversations with customers. Some of the delivery locations can be challenging as you would expect on operational farms, with tight areas to manoeuvre or even having to get your hands dirty during the wetter months. However, we find many of our drivers thrive on this challenge and enjoy the variety from day to day. With this in mind, the Assistant Transport Manager will need to be hands on to support challenges associated with these challenges.

Key responsibilities and duties of the role include:

  • Prioritise health and safety in the workplace, and assisting colleagues with the right behaviours and attitude towards H&S.
  • Ensure the Transport and warehouse teams adhere to processes and legal compliance.
  • Checking & monitoring operational status daily and assume accountability.
  • Assist with the delivery of customer SLA's and OTIF KPIs aligned to targets.
  • Support the deployment of the right amount of resource in-line with operational needs and budgets.
  • Aid the Transport Manager to track volumes v/s expenditure and to ensure productivity KPI's are met.
  • Provide the necessary leadership and coaching to the team and develop key relationships within the business.
  • Oversee transport scheduling and cover planning duties if needed operationally
  • Continually review all aspects of the operation, methods and processes to keep in line with continuous improvement.
  • Have regular input, interface and relationship building with key customer’s in-line with account management teams.
  • Deputise for the Transport Manager in their absence.
  • Provide support to the Transport Manager with managing the employees within Transport.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous experience of operating within a transport operation.
  • CPC National Qualification (desirable)
  • Experience in customer/trading relations
  • Exposure to operating within a commercial environment
  • Willingness to deliver successful cultural change programs
  • People management and line management experience is desirable
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety and Legal compliance
  • Excellent organisational skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Team working and customer focused attitude
  • Great communication skills
  • Transport scheduling experience preferred but not essential
  • Good computer literacy skills, including Microsoft office and Microsoft programs.
  • A good level of IT literacy

  • Opportunities to visit different sites, customers and suppliers.
  • Options to enhance your pension after 12 months service (increased employer contributions).

About ForFarmers

Do you ever stop to wonder where your Sunday morning poached egg came from? Or the milk in your cafè latte? Or what about the sausage and bacon served with full English? It will come as no surprise to you that the animals which produce these products need to eat themselves too. And that’s where ForFarmers comes into the equation.

ForFarmers produces feed for cattle, pigs and poultry in both conventional and organic livestock farming. And that probably sounds a great deal simpler than it actually is. Make no mistake: an awful lot of knowledge, research and innovation has gone into one of those seemingly simple-looking chunks of animal feed. And these are the kind of things we, as a company, invest a great deal in.
