About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for an experienced and motivated Assistant Finance Manager to join the Corporate Finance team.

The Assistant Finance Manager is responsible for building and maintaining effective relationships with stakeholders while working collaboratively across  the Corporate Finance team to deliver high-quality, efficient, and integrated financial management and accounting services.

Reporting to the Associate Director Finance, the role provides operational financial management, advice, analysis, reporting, and business support to assigned portfolio clients. The position partners with stakeholders to support informed decision-making, delivers practical financial solutions, and contributes to the effective management of financial operations.

Working within established policies and procedures, the role resolves a broad range of financial management, accounting, and decision-support matters. More complex or sensitive issues are escalated in consultation with senior team members and their manager.

The position also supports continuous improvement initiatives by contributing to the review and enhancement of financial policies, processes, and practices, drawing on operational experience and stakeholder feedback.

Success in this role requires a proactive, collaborative approach, with a strong focus on delivering responsive, customer-focused financial services that promote sound financial management and support the University's strategic objectives.

The successful candidate will be expected to work on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the flexibility to work from home on the remaining weekdays, subject to operational requirements.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • deliver portfolio financial management activities, including accounting and management reporting, month-end management, forecasting, budgeting and EOFY management

  • engage with stakeholders in the client portfolio for operational financial support and advice

  • support SFM’s and FM’s in the development of strategic annual client plans that identify the current and future key issues and needs

  • implement routine service delivery improvements to client portfolios and identifies opportunities for continuous improvement and the achievement of service excellence

  • maintain and champion compliance with Procurement and Finance policies and procedures across portfolio clients.

  • collaborating effectively and respectfully with peers to contribute to overall delivery of financial services objectives.

About you

  • a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business management or finance

  • ability to interpret, apply and integrate complex financial policies and procedures, external requirements and accounting standards

  • self-motivated with the ability to prioritise and manage own workload to meet both regular and unexpected workflow demands and strict deadlines

  • sound relationship management skills across all levels of the organisations, inspiring confidence, and trust

  • demonstrated skills in budgeting, forecasting, month end management, EOFY management, financial planning, reporting and analysis

  • strong experience in developing and/or tracking financial and non-financial key performance indicators

  • well-developed Microsoft Office skills particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; with the ability to adapt and utilise complex excel spreadsheets for financial reporting and analysis, budget and forecast preparation and analysis, KPI reporting, ad-hoc analysis etc.
