We are looking for an assistant business editor to commission business and economics content from correspondents and reporters, for online and in print, and to support the Head of Business and Deputy Business Editor. The successful candidate will be joining a team that covers a wide range of subjects including the cost of living, the world of work, transport, housing, energy, retail and hospitality, banking and the water and car industries.

 

This is a full-time permanent NUJ contract, working a nine-day fortnight including regular Sunday shifts.

 

About the role

  • Help to set the business and economics news agenda for the day
  • Support the Head of Business and Deputy Business Editor as directed
  • Lead the business desk on occasion and attend daily news meetings as required
  • Contribute to the smooth running and management of the department
  • Work with other departments to present news and features in a variety of ways and on different platforms, including using graphics, video, audio, photography, illustrations and other multimedia
  • Commission correspondents and reporters on ideas and help progress them from origination to publication
  • Work closely with design colleagues, video, audio and social media teams to ensure our journalism is showcased at its best on and off the Guardian’s platform
  • Work with other news departments where there are overlapping stories - eg national, consumer, international, tech, environment, US business and Australia
  • Monitor business news sources, eg wires, news and business websites, other newspapers and news magazines, broadcast media and social media platforms
  • Edit copy, check headlines 
  • Maintain a forward planning diary

 

About you

  • Demonstrable knowledge of business news and current affairs
  • Knowledge and experience of the demands of online, print and multimedia journalism
  • Strong track record as a journalist working for a major newspaper, news website or magazine
  • Demonstrable editing experience working in a fast-moving news environment
  • Confident news judgment
  • Strong writing and commissioning skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise and make decisions
  • Good grasp of media law
  • Understanding of how best to present journalism across multiple platforms
  • Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in King’s Cross in London.

The salary for this NUJ position starts from £70,000, with a package commensurate with the skills, level of experience and responsibilities of the position.
