Programme overview

As a Wealth Trainee, you will join our Wealth Planning team and work alongside advisers who provide tailored, regulated financial advice to high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families.

The structured programme combines practical experience with formal training. You will develop the technical knowledge, professional judgement and client skills needed to progress towards a career as an Assistant Wealth Planner, while gaining a broader understanding of investments and client relationship management. The Wealth Trainee programme brings together trainees based in our offices in London, Oxford, Bristol, Birmingham, Chester, Manchester, Leeds, and Edinburgh, and the Wealth Planning Trainees will be based in London.

Wealth Planning helps clients make informed decisions about their financial affairs. It begins with a detailed understanding of each client’s circumstances, objectives, and concerns, and covers areas including cash flow, tax-efficient investments pensions, retirement, estate planning, protection, gifting, succession, and the transfer of wealth between generations.

Clients’ needs often span several disciplines. Wealth Planners provide regulated financial planning advice and work with clients’ external advisers when specialist legal or tax advice is required. They help clients ask the right questions and often coordinate other advisers so that each area of work supports the client’s wider objectives. They also work closely with the client’s Portfolio Manager and colleagues in areas such as banking and lending.

Good planning can deepen existing relationships, uncover needs that have not yet been addressed and demonstrate the value we can offer to prospective clients. As your career develops, you may take responsibility for your own planning relationships, professional networks, and new client opportunities.

What you will do

  • Client information: Gather, organise and check the personal and financial information needed to understand a client’s circumstances.

  • Planning analysis: Help prepare cash-flow forecasts and other analysis to explore different planning choices and their implications.

  • Regulated advice: Support the preparation of formal regulated advice, client reports and meeting materials under appropriate supervision.

  • Client meetings: Observe and support client meetings, maintain clear records and help ensure that agreed actions are completed.

  • External advisers: Work with clients’ lawyers, accountants and other external advisers, helping to coordinate their specialist advice around the client’s wider objectives.

  • Internal collaboration: Work with Portfolio Managers, banking and lending specialists and other colleagues so that clients receive a coherent service.

  • Existing relationships: Identify further planning needs and opportunities to strengthen relationships with existing clients.

  • Business development: Contribute to pitches, proposals and other initiatives that develop relationships with prospective clients and professional advisers, taking ownership of ideas and following them through.

  • Regulation and conduct: Learn and apply the regulatory and conduct standards governing financial advice, and handle sensitive client information with care.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for graduates who are passionate about communicating with a variety of different clients, working in a dynamic environment that is driven by the complexities of financial markets, and changing legislation. You should enjoy understanding complex personal circumstances, asking thoughtful questions and turning detailed information into practical, clearly explained advice.

  • Communication and empathy: You listen carefully, build rapport and can discuss personal matters with warmth, tact and professionalism.

  • Analytical judgement: You can bring together numerical and written information, assess different options and recognise when specialist advice is required.

  • Clear writing: You can explain complex matters accurately and in plain English, including when helping to prepare formal advice.

  • Initiative and commercial awareness: You look for ways to add value, strengthen relationships and create opportunities, and are willing to carry ideas forward.

  • Academic background: You should be due to graduate in 2027, or have recently graduated, and be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, an honours degree or equivalent. We welcome applications from all degree subjects.

  • Digital skills: You should have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and be willing to learn the specialist systems used in wealth management.

  • Technology and judgement: You should be interested in how AI and emerging technologies can improve client service and efficiency, while understanding the need for confidentiality, accuracy and appropriate controls.
