The Science & Technology function in Unilever R&D develops breakthrough technologies and differentiated innovations to meet the needs of our consumers around the world. An opportunity has arisen within the Physical and Chemical Sciences group for a degree-qualified scientist with measurement and colloid science knowledge, to join our team at Port Sunlight. The PCS group utilises materials and formulation science to develop the next generation of unmissably desirable products for Hair and Skin Care. The role is ideally suited to an energetic, self-motivated, resourceful research scientist with strong people and communication skills. Previous experience of working on formulation ingredient development, either in academia or industry would be beneficial.
Key Responsibilities:
• Contribute to the design of experiments that probe the rules that drive performance of formulation ingredients.
• Formulate technology leads in relevant product formats and characterise the system’s physical properties.
• Evaluate and compare formulation performance against consumer perceivable benefits
• Execute experimental plans to agreed timings.
• Keep accurate records of experimental data and analysis of results.
• Deliver verbal and written communication of results, key insights, developments and observations to project teams.
• The role will require regular working at the Materials Innovation Factory in Liverpool.
Skills/ Experience/ Qualifications:
• Batchelors or master’s degree in chemistry, or other suitable science.
• Experience of working in colloid and interface science, physical chemistry or materials science,

• Knowledge of experimental techniques and materials selection relevant to the design and characterisation of fast-moving consumer goods formulations would be beneficial.
• Awareness of automated systems, and digital tools that support an in-silico first approach to formulation design.
• Rigorous attention to detail and good data analysis skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to convey scientific and project findings to audiences with varied backgrounds.
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
